NO on Proposition 87 - November 2006

Faced with running against a popular concept (taxing oil companies) and a difficult environment to find credible messengers that would resonate with the voting public, lead consulting firm Woodward McDowell contracted with Madrid & Associates to coordinate the effort of recruiting elected mayors and council members throughout the state to speak out against the onerous tax measure.

No On Prop 87Tasked with identifying local elected officials who would publicly speak out against Proposition 87, we developed a statewide strategy that sought endorsements from likely supporters, neutralized "swing endorsements", and marginalized endorsers with a strong counter-communications strategy - all focused on resonant local government messages. All in all, Madrid & Associates recruited over 100 mayors and council members to advocate, speak and encourage others to oppose Proposition 87. The effort proved successful and Proposition 87 was handily defeated 55-45% after initial polling indicated it would win by a wide margin.

YES on Propositions 94, 95, 96 and 97 - February 2007

After a hard fought legislative battle, four of the largest Indian tribes in California found their recently approved gaming compacts subject to a referendum. This unprecedented act, funded largely by a Las Vegas Casino owner, competing tribes and labor unions, sought to overturn negotiated agreements by placing them before the voters.

The plan developed by Madrid & Associates, concentrated efforts by targeted regional, ideological and local leadership roles. The effort proved successful as the YES campaign enlisted more local elected officials by a ratio of over 20 to 1. The compacts were reaffirmed by the voters 56-44%.

NO on Proposition 79 - November 2005

No On Prop 79Facing a costly surge in the price of prescription drugs, both consumer advocates and drug companies placed competing solutions to reduce prices on the ballot. Both measures would have reduced drug prices - one through mandates and the other through voluntary controls. Madrid & Associates was contracted to build support among Latino physicians in opposition to Proposition 79. Focused on demonstrating doctor opposition in minority communities, Madrid & Associates developed a speakers bureau, conducted press conferences and executed an effective earned media strategy that assisted in the successful defeat of Proposition 79 by a margin of 60-40%
